Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about patent licensing and working with ILG.
Patent Licensing
What is patent licensing and how does it work?
Patent licensing is the process of granting another party permission to use, manufacture, or sell a patented invention in exchange for compensation — typically royalties or a lump-sum payment. ILG helps patent holders identify potential licensees, negotiate terms, and structure deals that maximize the value of their intellectual property.
How do I know if my patent is valuable enough to license?
Most patents have licensing potential, but value depends on several factors: the breadth of claims, the size of the market using the technology, remaining patent life, and whether potential infringers can be identified. ILG offers a free initial assessment and our AI-powered patent calculator can provide a preliminary valuation estimate.
How long does the patent licensing process typically take?
Timelines vary significantly based on the technology, target companies, and negotiation complexity. Simple licensing deals can close in 3-6 months, while more complex campaigns involving multiple targets may take 12-18 months. ILG provides regular progress updates and adjusts strategy as needed throughout the process.
What types of patents does ILG work with?
ILG works across all technology areas including software, hardware, biotech, manufacturing processes, consumer products, and more. We have particular expertise in semiconductor, telecommunications, IoT, and medical device patents. Our team evaluates each patent on its individual merits regardless of technology domain.
Pricing & Billing
How much does it cost to work with ILG?
ILG offers four service tiers starting at $97/month for self-service tools, up to custom enterprise engagements for large portfolios. Most clients choose our Assisted tier ($297/month) which includes campaign setup and management. Success fees range from 5-25% depending on the tier, meaning ILG is invested in your success.
What is a success fee and when do I pay it?
A success fee is a percentage of revenue generated from licensing deals that ILG helps close. You only pay the success fee when money comes in — there is no risk of paying for results that do not materialize. This aligns ILG's incentives directly with yours: we only succeed when you do.
Can I change my service tier later?
Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade your service tier at any time. Upgrades take effect immediately, and downgrades apply at the next billing cycle. Many clients start with Tier 1 to explore their options and upgrade to Tier 2 or 3 once they are ready for active campaign management.
Is there a contract or commitment period?
Monthly subscriptions can be cancelled at any time with no long-term commitment. Annual plans offer a discount and are billed upfront. Full-service engagements (Tier 3 and 4) typically involve a project-based agreement with clear milestones and deliverables.
Our Process
What happens after I sign up?
After signing up, you will receive access to the ILG Portal where you can upload your patent information and complete your profile. For Tier 2 and above, an ILG advisor will schedule an onboarding call within 48 hours to discuss your goals, review your patent, and develop an initial strategy.
How does ILG identify potential licensees?
ILG uses a combination of AI-powered analysis, patent claim mapping, industry databases, and expert research to identify companies that may be using technology covered by your patent. We build comprehensive target lists typically ranging from 25 to 500+ companies depending on the technology and service tier.
What if a company refuses to take a license?
Most licensing programs are resolved through professional negotiation without litigation. However, if a company is clearly using your technology and refuses to negotiate in good faith, ILG can help evaluate litigation options and connect you with specialized IP litigation firms. Our Tier 3 service includes litigation management if needed.
Will I be involved in negotiations?
The level of your involvement depends on your service tier and preference. Tier 1 and 2 clients handle their own negotiations with ILG guidance and templates. Tier 3 and 4 clients have ILG negotiate directly on their behalf, keeping you informed at every step but handling the heavy lifting.
Getting Started
I have a patent but do not know where to start — can ILG help?
Absolutely. Most of our clients come to us in exactly this position. Start with a free consultation where we will review your patent, discuss your goals, and recommend the best path forward. You can also use our free patent calculator tool for an instant preliminary assessment.
Do I need a lawyer to license my patent?
While legal counsel is recommended for reviewing final agreements, you do not need a lawyer to begin the licensing process. ILG handles the business development, target identification, outreach, and initial negotiations. We recommend engaging legal counsel when a deal reaches the term sheet stage.
Can ILG help with patents that are about to expire?
Yes, though timing is important. Patents with less than 5 years remaining can still be valuable, especially if there is clear evidence of use by large companies. Past damages for infringement can also be pursued for up to 6 years prior. Contact us early to maximize the remaining value window.
What makes ILG different from other patent licensing firms?
ILG combines AI-powered tools with hands-on expert management, offers flexible service tiers for every budget, and operates on a success-fee model that aligns our interests with yours. Unlike large patent assertion entities, ILG provides personalized attention and transparent communication throughout the process.
